NEW YORK — A Twitter account that features footage of a movie about a female character who has been sexually assaulted has generated thousands of likes.
A new video has been viewed more than 4.5 million times and received more than 13,000 comments.
The film, called “Truly Awesome,” is about a young woman named Ella who is raped and assaulted while working in a movie theater in the 1980s.
The clip, which features the iconic scenes from “The Goonies,” has been watched more than 8.3 million times.
“I’m not surprised,” the actress, who goes by Ella in the video, told ABC News on Wednesday.
“I feel like it’s a celebration of this woman.
She’s an inspiration.”
It’s unclear what Ella, a fictional character in the film, has been doing since her assault in 1982.
Ella is portrayed by an unnamed female actor who was also raped.
A Twitter user named @TrulyAwesome posted a photo of the video that she shared on Twitter Wednesday.
She posted the image along with the hashtags “totally awesome,” “finally awesome” and “great.”
“It’s amazing to see this, because there’s a ton of people who are very proud to support it,” Ella said.
She said she was inspired to make the video after seeing a post on the film’s Facebook page about a rape survivor.
The survivor is a young man named Tim.
“This story resonated with me,” Ellasaid.
“So I thought, let’s do it.”
The actress is not sure if the video will make a big impact on Twitter.
“Twitter is really weird,” she said.
“They are super, super quick to take sides and take things away.”
She said the video was not aimed at any particular group of people.
“There are so many people who have been victimized by the entertainment industry, so it’s just amazing to hear it from people who can relate to that,” she added.
