A week after his film The Fences opened in theaters nationwide, filmmaker Michael Moore says he is “in a good place” following the festival’s two-day festival run.
In a Facebook Live video posted Friday morning, Moore said he had spent a couple of weeks in the Tribeca film scene, and that his “filmmaking career is finally here.”
The film was originally released in January, but Moore says that he was forced to re-release the film in January after the festival passed a budget-cutting measure.
The film is still available on iTunes, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and other streaming services.
Moore’s film, which chronicles the rise and fall of a group of “proud and independent Americans” who make a documentary film about police brutality, has been hailed as an important step toward justice for a movement that he says was “intimidated” by the film’s trailer and negative reviews.
Moore said he was “so grateful” to have a film that could have “a big impact on the lives of people” in the Bay Area and around the country, but also acknowledged that the film has been criticized for its themes of police brutality and a “culture of violence.”
“The Fences has been a little too politically charged, and I don’t want people to think that’s a good thing,” he said.
“But this is about a group, it’s about people of color, it was about a black man in New York City, and it was a black woman in Texas.
And I wanted to tell this story of the people that were there, and of the struggle of this group of people.
So it was just so important to tell that story.”
I think that was a big part of the movie, but I think also a lot of people were just too focused on the negative things about it.
“Moore said that he had been “blown away” by how the festival responded to the film, and was thrilled to be able to speak with festival organizers and the media at the film festival on Sunday.”
In addition to his Facebook Live, Moore posted an extensive list of the film festivals highlights, including an overview of his festival experience and his favorite moments, and shared an overview for attendees on the Tribes website.”
It’s an honor to be a part of it.”

The Fence, a film about the Black Lives Matter movement, is Moore’s latest documentary.
It tells the story of four black New Yorkers who became the focus of the protests that swept through their city in response to the death of Eric Garner.
