AUSTRALIA’S first independent film, ‘Hugos’, has been officially approved for a nationwide release.
The film, which stars Tom Burton and Julie Christie, is due to open in cinemas on December 18, with a limited run of 200 copies in hand.
Director-producer and former producer Tom Burtson said he hoped that the film would be the first Australian film to be made in cinemassas and was proud to have been granted permission for it to be released.
“It’s such a great honour to be able to give something like this to our community and to people all over the world,” he said.
“This film is a tribute to a man who has a legacy of being able to deliver such great films in our country.”
Burton said he was excited to be working with a group of friends to make the film in Australia and hoped that it would “be the first of its kind”.
“Hugo” is about a young boy who is being taken to boarding school by his father, who is abusive and violent,” he explained.”
He’s been bullied and bullied by his classmates and his parents and it doesn’t make sense that they are allowed to do it.”‘

“I have to say it’s been a struggle to get this film made in the country because of the restrictions we have in Australia,” he added.
“The restrictions are so strict, and people just don’t understand how important film is and how important it is that people in Australia have the right to see it.”
Mr Burton said that he was confident that “Hugo’s” release would go down well with Australians, who have been “scared” of the film since its release.
“You just have to go back and watch the film and see that people are so proud of it,” he noted.
“We’ve got to do everything we can to get it to the people who really want to see this film.”
Mr Buxton, who was at the premiere in Sydney, said that there was a lot of excitement for “Hugos” in the community.
“There’s a lot going on at the moment, it’s a great film, it has an amazing story,” he commented.
“A lot of people are excited about it, and I’m sure there will be more people excited about ‘Hugoos’ in the coming months.”
The film is due for release on DVD and Blu-ray on December 20.
